Lamy was founded by Josef Lamy in 1930 in Heidelberg, Germany. Josef Lamy gained experience as an export manager at a competing American manufacturer, but after founding his own company Orthos, he relied only on his instinct. As early as 1933, his company obtained a patent for new multifunction pens for the production of fountain pens. At the beginning of World War II, his company produced more than 200,000 a year.

Lamy is currently one of the largest suppliers of stationery and in terms of annual turnover is even the largest manufacturer of luxury stationery in the world since 2018.
